Mythology & Religion Power Ranking: #8 Ananke (Orphism)

Mythology & Religion Power Ranking TOP100

I wrote a book ranking the most powerful gods, monsters, and heroes from world mythologies, religions, and legends in order of strength! Of course, the rankings reflect a fair amount of my personal opinion, but the reasoning behind each placement is grounded in the actual lore and episodes from each mythology, so I think it makes for a fairly convincing read.

In this series, I’d like to introduce some of the characters featured in the book’s ranking. There are plenty of other characters beyond the ones covered here, so I think anyone interested in mythology, religion, or legends will find it an enjoyable read!

Rank 8: Ananke (Orphism)

Overview

Ananke is a primordial goddess in Orphism (a religion based on Greek mythology) who was born from Chaos. Together with the time god Chronos, she is said to have created the universe from the primordial egg.

Ananke governs the fate and necessity of the universe. The “fate and necessity” referred to here means the fundamental principles and laws (rules) of the universe itself.

The fate she decrees is said to be spun by the three Moirai — her daughters (though some accounts describe them as daughters of Zeus or Nyx).

Ananke is positioned above Zeus and the Olympian gods, who are responsible for maintaining cosmic order. The order that Zeus and the Olympians uphold is carried out within the framework of the necessity (rules) set by Ananke, and she holds the authority to compel even Zeus to comply with the fates she has determined.

In essence, Ananke is the “rulebook” of the universe itself — the power to determine outcomes (fates) applies regardless of who the opponent is.

Ananke is also said to have appeared as an incorporeal snake-like form enveloping the entire universe, which means destroying her would require obliterating the universe at its most fundamental level.

Ranking Reason

Within Orphism, she holds the highest divine status — an existence of a higher dimension than even Zeus, the supreme god. Being treated as “the law of the cosmos itself” makes her overwhelming power self-evident.

If she were to decree “you are fated to die here,” even a conceptual-level being could be erased. There are virtually no beings in world mythology capable of resisting her.

As long as one exists within the universe, escape from Ananke’s power is impossible. For any being to overcome her, at the very minimum they would need to exist perfectly even in the absence of the universe and possess the power to destroy the universe at its most fundamental level — and even then, they would only be her equal, with no guarantee of victory.

With all of this in mind, I placed her at this position in the ranking.
