Mythology & Religion Power Ranking TOP100
I wrote a book ranking the most powerful gods, monsters, and heroes from world mythologies, religions, and legends in order of strength! Of course, the rankings reflect a fair amount of my personal opinion, but the reasoning behind each placement is grounded in the actual lore and episodes from each mythology, so I think it makes for a fairly convincing read.
In this series, Iβd like to introduce some of the characters featured in the bookβs ranking. There are plenty of other characters beyond the ones covered here, so I think anyone interested in mythology, religion, or legends will find it an enjoyable read!
Rank 23: Huitzilopochtli (Aztec Mythology)

Overview
Huitzilopochtli is the sun god of Aztec mythology and is also famed as a war god β but beyond that, he is a deity with profound influence on what is now the modern nation of Mexico.
Mexico City, the capital of Mexico, is said to have been built in its current location following a divine oracle from Huitzilopochtli. Furthermore, the Mexican flag features an eagle β a symbol of Huitzilopochtli β along with a cactus connected to his divine oracle, conveying just how deeply Aztec mythology and Huitzilopochtli are woven into the Mexican national consciousness.
As a sun god, Huitzilopochtli was believed to one day defeat Tezcatlipoca β the god of the night sky β and bring the morning sun to the world.
Being regarded as a war god, the battle-oriented nature of Huitzilopochtli is made strikingly clear by the story of his birth.
When his mother, Coatlicue, became pregnant with him, more than 400 of his sisters and brothers (in Aztec mythology, β400β conveys an immensely great number) gathered and attacked, intending to kill their mother.
At that moment, Huitzilopochtli was born fully armed from his motherβs womb and instantly slew all 400-plus siblings β an astonishing feat.
To put this in perspective: even Zeus was virtually powerless at the time of his birth, yet Huitzilopochtli was the supreme war god from the very moment he entered the world.
Ranking Reason
Huitzilopochtli is considered the most powerful war deity in Aztec mythology β a tradition already known for its immense cosmic scale.
However, while there is religious belief that he will one day defeat Tezcatlipoca, no such event is depicted in the actual myths, and there are no scenes of him fighting Tezcatlipoca directly.
In the myths, he instantly slew 400 gods at the moment of his birth, so there is no question he possesses power incomparable to ordinary deities. However, he is not involved in any creation myths and has no episodes involving the destruction of the world, making him somewhat difficult to evaluate.
In terms of divine rank, he may be lower than Tlaloc or Chalchiuhtlicue β but would those deities have been able to instantly slay 400 gods at the moment of their birth? Honestly, I find that hard to believe.
Furthermore, the fact that his designated rival is Tezcatlipoca β the most powerful deity in Aztec mythology β suggests that in terms of raw combat power, Huitzilopochtli likely ranks above them.
On the other hand, compared to the supreme Aztec gods Tezcatlipoca and Quetzalcoatl, his birth episode is the only performance that can truly match them, which compels me to place him one tier lower.
For these reasons, I placed him at this position in the ranking.
