Myths & Legends Power Ranking #32: The Beast of Revelation (Christianity)

Myths, Religions & Legends Power Ranking TOP100

I wrote a book ranking the most powerful gods, monsters, and heroes from world mythology, religion, and legend in order of strength! Of course, the rankings reflect a great deal of my own subjective judgment, but the reasoning behind each placement is grounded in the lore and episodes of each mythology, so I think it’s a book that will feel reasonably convincing.

This time I’d like to introduce some of the characters featured in the book’s ranking. Of course, many more characters appear in the ranking beyond those introduced here, so I think anyone interested in mythology, religion, and legend will enjoy it!

Rank 32: The Beast of Revelation (Christianity)

Overview

In the apocalypse described in Christianity’s “Book of Revelation,” the “Beast of Revelation” is a monster empowered by the great red dragon (Satan) to subjugate God’s people (humanity).

Two beasts appear: the one that rises from the sea is called the “First Beast,” and the one that rises from the earth afterward is called the “Second Beast.”

The “First Beast” has ten horns and seven heads, with ten crowns on its horns, and is described as looking “like a leopard, with the feet of a bear and a mouth like a lion.”

The “Second Beast” is described as a beast with two horns resembling those of a lamb, and is also known as the “False Prophet,” specializing in brainwashing people.

The First Beast is a pure combat type, while the Second Beast is more of a strategist — and for the purposes of this ranking, we will focus on the “First Beast.”

The Beast of Revelation is often treated as a symbol of the Antichrist and portrayed as something that destroys the world, but in reality there are almost no scenes in which its strength is shown directly.

In Revelation, the voices of the people say “Who is like the beast? Who can wage war against it?” — suggesting it is a being that no human can challenge in battle.

There is also a description of it appearing to have a fatal wound that then heals, implying it can use a miracle to easily heal no matter how badly it is injured.

As such, it is generally considered an immortal being that nothing other than God can defeat. By displaying such abilities before humanity, the Beast of Revelation brought almost all of humanity — except for some Christians — under its control.

It continued to rule humanity for a long period, but in the end the humans who had worshipped the beast incurred the wrath of God, seven angels sounded trumpets heralding the end times, and both the First and Second Beasts were cast into a lake of fire and sulfur by Jesus Christ, who released God’s power, bringing them to their end.

Reason for This Ranking

The Beast of Revelation is also a difficult entity to evaluate, but based on the descriptions in the scriptures, it possesses the power to “easily dominate the entire world.”

There are almost no scenes showing actual combat power, and in the first place, within the Christian worldview there likely are no superhuman heroes, so the difficulty of dominating the world may be far lower than in other mythologies — but there is no doubt that it possesses the power to destroy the world on its own.

In reality, the brainwashing power of the Second Beast also played a role, but the First Beast is the sole pure combat unit — taking that into consideration, I concluded it likely possesses destruction-god-tier power as seen in other mythologies, and placed it at this ranking.

As for the opponent it lost to — Jesus Christ — the matchup is simply too unfair, so that loss does not affect its placement here.
