Myths & Legends Power Ranking #33: Tlaloc (Aztec Mythology)

Myths, Religions & Legends Power Ranking TOP100

I wrote a book ranking the most powerful gods, monsters, and heroes from world mythology, religion, and legend in order of strength! Of course, the rankings reflect a great deal of my own subjective judgment, but the reasoning behind each placement is grounded in the lore and episodes of each mythology, so I think it’s a book that will feel reasonably convincing.

This time I’d like to introduce some of the characters featured in the book’s ranking. Of course, many more characters appear in the ranking beyond those introduced here, so I think anyone interested in mythology, religion, and legend will enjoy it!

Rank 33: Tlaloc (Aztec Mythology)

Overview

Tlaloc is the god of rain and thunder in Aztec mythology, believed to be deeply connected to both fertility and drought. In Aztec mythology, the world has been destroyed and recreated multiple times, and Tlaloc was the patron deity of the β€œThird Sun era.”

However, in the age of the Third Sun, it was Tlaloc himself who reportedly rained fire down upon the world to destroy it (other accounts attribute this to Quetzalcoatl).

The reasons given include the people’s neglect in worshipping Tlaloc and their failure to provide sufficient sacrifices, as well as the abduction (or theft) of his wife Xochiquetzal by Tezcatlipoca.

Tlaloc is the archetypal nature deity β€” a personification of natural phenomena β€” and there are no episodes at all in which he fights enemies. Therefore, while we can get a rough idea of his power from the episodes mentioned above, the defensive aspects of his power remain largely unclear.

However, given that he apparently cannot defy Tezcatlipoca, it can be inferred that he does not possess any exceptional defensive abilities, and that he could be defeated in battle by an opponent of equal standing.

Reason for This Ranking

Tlaloc is a deity with clearly demonstrated supernatural power β€” able to rain fire across the entire world to destroy it, and also said to possess the power to trigger floods that wipe out the world. The fact that he actually destroyed the world once leaves no room to doubt his power.

On the other hand, within the mythology, he cannot defy the higher-ranked Tezcatlipoca, which tells us he does not possess power on par with Tezcatlipoca. Taking all of this into account, I placed him at this position in the ranking.
