Myths, Religions & Legends Power Ranking TOP100

I wrote a book ranking the most powerful gods, monsters, and heroes from world mythology, religion, and legend in order of strength! Of course, the rankings reflect a great deal of my own subjective judgment, but the reasoning behind each placement is grounded in the lore and episodes of each mythology, so I think it’s a book that will feel reasonably convincing.

This time I’d like to introduce some of the characters featured in the book’s ranking. Of course, many more characters appear in the ranking beyond those introduced here, so I think anyone interested in mythology, religion, and legend will enjoy it!

Rank 34: Chalchiuhtlicue (Aztec Mythology)

Overview

Chalchiuhtlicue is the goddess of water in Aztec mythology and served as the patron deity overseeing the world during the age of the Fourth Sun. She is sometimes said to be Tlaloc’s second wife, but in the mythology she frequently appears alongside Quetzalcoatl and other water deities.

She was said to be deeply loving toward both people and the world, but Tezcatlipoca whispered to the people that “she is not truly loving — she is only pretending to be kind to win their admiration,” causing the people to lose faith in Chalchiuhtlicue.

Upon learning of this, she wept continuously, and the tears she shed caused a flood that inundated the entire world, leading to its destruction.

Reason for This Ranking

In Aztec mythology, it is said that the world has already been destroyed four times, and we are now in the Fifth Sun era. The deity who destroyed the previous, fourth world was none other than Chalchiuhtlicue.

She destroyed the world with literally no malicious intent — simply by weeping — making her power genuinely extraordinary. Compared to other flood deities in myth, such as Adad, who deliberately caused their floods, her power is overwhelmingly superior.

On the other hand, there are no combat depictions whatsoever, so any abilities beyond this remain unknown. And since her divine authority likely ranks below Tlaloc’s in terms of raw power, I placed her at this position in the ranking.
