Mythology Power Ranking #78: Chiron (Greek Mythology)

Mythology, Religion & Legend — Power Ranking TOP 100

I wrote a book ranking the most powerful gods, monsters, and heroes from world mythology, religion, and legend! The ranking is heavily influenced by my own perspective, but every placement is grounded in the actual lore and episodes from each mythology, so I think it makes for a satisfying read.

In this post, I’d like to introduce some of the characters featured in the ranking. There are many more beyond the ones mentioned here, so if you’re interested in mythology, religion, or legend, I think you’ll enjoy it!

Rank 78: Chiron (Greek Mythology)

Overview

Chiron is a wise centaur in Greek mythology and one of the most famous mentors of heroes.

His origins differ greatly from those of other centaurs. He was born when Cronus — the father of Zeus — transformed into a horse to escape the eyes of his wife, and lay with the nymph Philyra, producing a half-human, half-horse offspring (upper body human, lower body horse).

Chiron was exceptionally talented across many fields: medicine, hunting, martial arts, music, prophecy, and more.

He is also well known for having taught many heroes his skills. His students include some of the greatest names in Greek mythology — Achilles, Asclepius, and Hercules — earning him the title “teacher of heroes.”

Chiron was an immortal being, but during a brawl between Hercules and some centaurs, one of Hercules’ Hydra-poisoned arrows accidentally struck Chiron.

Although immortal, the Hydra’s venom caused him such unbearable agony that he chose to pass his immortality on to Prometheus and accept death rather than endure it any longer.

Why This Ranking

While there are no mythological depictions of Chiron fighting directly, the fact that he trained heroes such as Hercules and Achilles strongly implies that he himself possessed the power of a war god.

The episode of his death from the Hydra’s arrow actually serves as a testament to his immortality — for an ordinary human hero to defeat the immortal, martially gifted Chiron would be extraordinarily difficult.

At the same time, he has no legends of actual combat valor of the kind that other war gods possess, leaving his true power unclear in many respects. Furthermore, even if it was an accident, the fact that he was pierced by Hercules’ arrow highlights a weakness in his defense compared to higher-tier war gods.

For these reasons, I placed him at this position in the ranking.
