Mythology, Religion & Legend — Power Ranking TOP 100
I wrote a book ranking the most powerful gods, monsters, and heroes from world mythology, religion, and legend! The ranking is heavily influenced by my own perspective, but every placement is grounded in the actual lore and episodes from each mythology, so I think it makes for a satisfying read.
In this post, I’d like to introduce some of the characters featured in the ranking. There are many more beyond the ones mentioned here, so if you’re interested in mythology, religion, or legend, I think you’ll enjoy it!
Rank 91: Scáthach (Celtic Mythology)

Overview
Scáthach is a female warrior in Celtic mythology and is famous as the teacher of the hero Cú Chulainn. She is the queen who rules over the “Land of Shadows” in Alba (modern-day Scotland), and is described as a master of every martial art and form of sorcery.
She taught many warriors, but she took a particular liking to Cú Chulainn, who had reached her land by his own strength, and taught him everything she knew — all her techniques and magic.
In the myths, Scáthach is depicted as a being of distinctly superhuman nature, but whether she was actually human, a goddess, or some kind of faerie is never stated clearly, leaving her true nature unknown.
Scáthach is said to have taught Cú Chulainn the magic spear Gáe Bolg and its techniques, which makes it almost certain she could also use the Gáe Bolg herself (though how well she could handle it compared to Cú Chulainn is unclear).
Scáthach had a rival — another renowned female warrior named Aoife — and she made Cú Chulainn face Aoife as his final trial.
As a result, Cú Chulainn defeated Aoife, who was said to be on par with Scáthach herself, and he came to be recognized as a being who had surpassed his master.
Why This Ranking
Scáthach is not merely “Cú Chulainn’s teacher” — she stands at the apex of warriors within Celtic mythology.
She both bestowed the Gáe Bolg on Cú Chulainn and taught him to use it. Since only she and Cú Chulainn wield the spear in the myths, it can be inferred that she herself possessed the ability to use the Gáe Bolg.
Whether she is human or divine is unclear, but even if she were a goddess, Celtic mythology’s worldbuilding suggests her immortality would be limited — and from the depictions involving Cú Chulainn, it seems she has not surpassed the human hero tier.
Furthermore, given that Cú Chulainn continued to grow as a hero after his training and is believed to have ultimately surpassed Scáthach, her power is rated as roughly equivalent to Cú Chulainn or slightly below him.
