Mythology Power Ranking #94: Perseus (Greek Mythology)

Mythology, Religion & Legend — Power Ranking TOP 100

I wrote a book ranking the most powerful gods, monsters, and heroes from world mythology, religion, and legend! The ranking is heavily influenced by my own perspective, but every placement is grounded in the actual lore and episodes from each mythology, so I think it makes for a satisfying read.

In this post, I’d like to introduce some of the characters featured in the ranking. There are many more beyond the ones mentioned here, so if you’re interested in mythology, religion, or legend, I think you’ll enjoy it!

Rank 94: Perseus (Greek Mythology)

Overview

Perseus is a hero of Greek mythology widely known for the legend of slaying the monster Medusa.

Medusa possessed the terrifying power to turn anyone who looked at her to stone, making her impossible for anyone to defeat — but Perseus used equipment granted by the gods, struck while Medusa was asleep, and cut off her head to slay her.

After defeating Medusa and on his way home, Perseus also used her severed head to rescue the Ethiopian princess Andromeda from the sea monster Cetus, and to turn the sky-bearing giant Atlas to stone.

Since this ranking evaluates characters at their peak, I will evaluate Perseus in a state where all of his equipment is available: the sickle “Harpe,” forged by Hephaestus and passed to Hermes; the winged sandals “Talaria” given by Hermes for the Medusa slaying; the “bronze shield (official name unknown)” given by Athena so he could see Medusa without looking directly at her; and the “Helm of Darkness” — Hades’ helmet used even during the Titanomachy to turn invisible.

As for Medusa’s severed head, I debated whether to count it as equipment, but since its power is entirely Medusa’s own, I chose not to classify it as equipment.

Why This Ranking

Perseus is a hero whose equipment clearly overshadows his own personal power. His gear consists entirely of items belonging to famous high-ranking gods, so even compared to war gods, his equipment actually surpasses theirs.

Given this, one might expect him to rank highly for slaying the extraordinarily powerful Medusa — but rather than direct combat, he effectively assassinated her while she slept. Honestly, it is difficult to give high marks to his direct combat ability on that basis.

When Perseus fought the sea monster Cetus after defeating Medusa, his attacks barely registered against it, revealing that even with all this equipment his raw power simply cannot touch divine beings.

He ultimately killed Cetus using Medusa’s head, but this just means Medusa herself could have one-shot Cetus — so this elevates Medusa’s evaluation rather than Perseus’.

Since this ranking is a 1-on-1 fight format, the probability of an assassination succeeding against an equal or superior opponent is extremely low. Taking all of this into account, I placed him at this position in the ranking.
