Mythology Power Ranking #70: Hydra (Greek Mythology)

Mythology, Religion & Legend — Power Ranking TOP 100

I wrote a book ranking the most powerful gods, monsters, and heroes from world mythology, religion, and legend! The ranking is heavily influenced by my own perspective, but every placement is grounded in the actual lore and episodes from each mythology, so I think it makes for a satisfying read.

In this post, I’d like to introduce some of the characters featured in the ranking. There are many more beyond the ones mentioned here, so if you’re interested in mythology, religion, or legend, I think you’ll enjoy it!

Rank 70: Hydra (Greek Mythology)

Overview

The Hydra is a massive serpentine monster with nine heads in Greek mythology. It is the offspring of Typhon and Echidna, and is thus a sibling of other famous Greek monsters such as Orthrus, Cerberus, and the Chimera.

While the Hydra’s physical attacks are powerful thanks to its massive body, its most troublesome ability is its extraordinary immortality and regeneration.

Of its nine heads, eight can be defeated — but the moment one is cut off, two more grow back from the wound, making it impossible to eliminate no matter how many are destroyed. Even Hercules, the greatest hero of Greek mythology, was unable to defeat it alone.

Hercules enlisted the help of his nephew Iolaus, who cauterized each neck stump after a head was cut off, preventing the Hydra’s regeneration.

However, since the ninth and final head was completely immortal, burning it was not enough to kill it. Hercules ultimately cut it off and sealed it under a massive boulder (the final head likely survived but was effectively imprisoned).

Beyond its immortality and extraordinary regeneration, the Hydra possesses another tremendous ability that was exploited in various contexts long after its defeat: its extraordinarily lethal venom. Its breath alone is deadly enough to kill an ordinary human, and the poison is said to be incurable.

Its venom is treated as uniquely powerful even within the myths — the story of Chiron’s death suggests it could even indirectly kill immortal gods — and it claimed the lives of countless heroes, gods, and giants, including Hercules himself.

Why This Ranking

In modern anime and video games, the Hydra is frequently used as a mid-game boss, but looking at the actual mythology, it is a monster of considerable magnitude.

From the depiction of Hercules being unable to defeat it alone and needing his nephew’s help, and from the description of a venom capable of killing even gods, it is clear that even the gods themselves would struggle to bring it down.

That said, if Hercules had been truly cornered, he probably could have found a way to seal it solo — like crushing it under a mountain range — so whether it is actually stronger than Hercules is somewhat debatable.

Even so, given that its defeat is virtually impossible for anything short of a top hero, I placed it at this position in the ranking.
