The GPT Store Is Now Live
The GPT Store, which had been announced in advance, officially launched on Wednesday, January 10, 2024 (US time).
The official post on X reads as follows:
https://twitter.com/OpenAI/status/1745141391934828696
The post announces that over 3 million GPTs have already been created in the GPTs ecosystem — and that anyone can now search for and use them freely.
The post also links to the official OpenAI blog, which goes into more detail. Here’s a summary of the key points:
- The GPT Store is available to ChatGPT Plus, Team, and Enterprise users
- The store features trending and curated GPTs
- OpenAI will highlight featured GPTs each week
- Custom GPTs set to “Everyone” visibility with a properly configured profile will appear in the GPT Store
- Builders will eventually be able to earn money based on how much their GPTs are used

Can You Actually Earn Money from the GPT Store?
For anyone who has built custom GPTs, the burning question is almost certainly: can I make money from the GPT Store?
Here’s what the official blog says on that point:
Builders will be able to earn based on GPT usage
In Q1, we will launch a GPT builder revenue program. As a first step, builders in the US will be paid based on user engagement with their GPTs. We will provide more details on the criteria for payments as we get closer.
So: earning money is coming — but as of the store’s launch, it isn’t possible yet.
The revenue program is set to roll out gradually starting in Q1, so if you’re interested in earning from your GPTs, now is a good time to start building and publishing them.
Creating a custom GPT is surprisingly straightforward — I plan to cover that in a future article.
If your goal is to earn revenue, GPTs aimed at English-speaking audiences are likely to perform better than ones targeting a Japanese audience (simply because the Japanese ChatGPT user base is comparatively small).
